About Us

The COHO Swim Club is a high quality competitive and comprehensive developmental program for residents in Deerfield, Highland Park, and surrounding communities. Founded in 1971, COHO is a co-sponsored program of the Deerfield Park District and the Park District of Highland Park with a long-standing rich tradition and history of success in swimming on the local, regional, and national levels.

The COHO Swim Club is a developmental and competitive swim club open to swimmers age 5 years and older. The club is divided into Developmental (Minnows & Sharks, Age Group (10 & Under White, Blue, Red groups and 11 & Over White, Blue, Red groups), and Senior Programs (Gold 1 and Gold 2). All swimmers are placed into groups according to their age, ability, and commitment level. This structure allows us to meet the individual needs of each swimmer. OUR MISSION: Our mission is to provide coaches, facilities, and support for increased proficiency in competitive amateur swimming; to encourage and develop sound swimming skills; to develop good sportsmanship, individual integrity, and a positive team atmosphere.

COHO Head Coach Nancy Reese, Head Age Group Coach Jacob Weber, and Head Developmental Coach Jeff Napolski are full-time employees of the Deerfield Park District. The primary function of each position is the daily operation of the COHO Swim Club, but all three positions also incorporate other duties within the District. The three full-time COHO coaches are also voting members of the COHO Parent Board. Part-time coaches are also employed by the Deerfield Park District and are hired at the discretion of the Head Coach. All COHO coaches are trained in CPR, First Aid, Athlete Protection and Coaches Safety. All coaches are certified by USA Swimming. COHO coaches also further their education by attending clinics and seminars, and by participating in the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA), an accreditation and continuing education program.

COACHES AND PARENT BOARD: Please scroll down to the bottom of this page for a list of COHO Parent Association Board Members & their contact information. *The three full-time coaches are also voting members of the board. Our practice and “home” swim meet locations can also be found at the bottom of the page.*

Nancy Reese

Head Coach

Office Phone: 847-572-2622

ASCA LEVEL 3 – Head Coach Nancy Reese began coaching at COHO in 1996, and became the Head Coach in 2002. Nancy grew up in Hanover Park and swam for the Hanover Park Park District, Elgin YMCA, Elgin High School, and Illinois State University. In High School, Nancy was a 4 year Varsity swimmer, a 2 year Team Captain, and an IHSA State Qualifier, swimming mainly breaststroke and IM.

At the collegiate level, Nancy was a 4 year letter winner and an All-Conference selection while earning her Bachelors degree in Psychology and her Masters degree in Physical Education (Coaching/Sport Psychology). In addition to breaststroke, Nancy also swam the 1650 free at ISU and wishes she had been introduced to distance swimming much earlier in her career. This may explain why she constantly encourages swimmers to expand their horizons beyond what they think they can do and to give ALL events a chance!

During her tenure as the Head Coach at COHO, Nancy has coached numerous State Champions, Sectional Medalists, Junior National qualifiers, and over 150 team records have been broken! Nancy has been selected as an Illinois Swimming Elite Camp Coach, Team Illinois Midstates Coach, Team Illinois Central Zones and Megazones Coach, and Team Illinois Age Group Zones Team Manager. Nancy served as a member of the Illinois Swimming Age Group Committee from 2004 to 2011, and Illinois Swimming Senior Committee from 2012-2014. In August 2014 Nancy was elected to the Illinois Swimming Board of Directors as the Coaches Representative for ISI.

Office Phone: 847-572-2626

ASCA LEVEL 1 – Head Developmental Coach Jeff Napolski started with COHO in 2008. Jeff attended Libertyville High School, and swam 200IM, 50 free, and 100 back. Coach Jeff graduated from the University of Illinois, and moved back up to the area and started teaching swim lessons and coaching with a summer league team before coming to COHO.

Coach todd

Todd Keil

Head Masters Coach

Our Coho Masters coach is a USMS National Champion and All-American. Todd Keil is a local product who swam for the Lake Forest Swim Club from age group through high school. He went to Rice University in Houston, Texas on a swimming scholarship. Todd graduated with a degree in engineering and worked in that industry for 35+ years. He returned to swimming in 2011 and found it extremely painful and humbling. He also discovered how great the people are and how supportive the Masters swimming community is. He can be reached at: if you have questions, suggestions, or complaints. Be careful with the complaints as he has an “old school” fondness for 1650 time trials as a part of practice.

Coach mitch

Mitch Madden

Assitant Coach

ASCA LEVEL 1 – Mitch Madden returned to coaching and joined the COHO staff in 2002. After several years as a swim parent and swimming official, Mitch prefers helping age groupers improve their strokes, over having to disqualify them. A former breaststroker, Coach Mitch shares a great deal of enthusiasm and understanding of swimming with COHO swimmers and parents. Mitch also works as an independent Marketing/Advertising Director.

Coach erika

Erica Chu

Assitant Coach

*Erica joined the Coho staff in 2012. She is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University and was a 4 year member of the college swim team, and loved to swim the 200 IM and breaststroke. Assistant Coach

Our most dedicated group of volunteers is our Parent Board. Officially known as the COHO Swim Club Parents’ Association; our Board is made up of a variety of positions, each with its own description and responsibilities. The commitment varies depending on the position, but all members attend a monthly evening board meeting. Positions include President, Past President, Secretary, Treasurer, Meet Director, Team Activity Director, Fundraising, Equipment, Officials Director, and Concessions. On occasion, we also form committees to address certain needs of the club in which we try for a mixture of current Board members and other COHO parents. It is always good to have a variety of opinions from a wide range of parents when we are addressing the needs of the club. Board positions are a two-year commitment, and we are always looking for new parents to step up and get involved.
